Washington is unlikely to support Seoul's request for help in the construction of nuclear submarines. This was stated by US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, speaking at the Singaporean security forum “Shangri-La Dialogue”, broadcast on the Pentagon website.
Austin was reminded of the AUKUS security partnership between the governments of Australia, the United Kingdom and the United States, which provides for the construction of a fleet of nuclear submarines for Australia, and asked if he would support South Korea if its government formally asked Washington aid in the construction of nuclear submarines.
„I very much doubt that we will be able to undertake another such initiative in the near future,”, replied the US Secretary of Defense. However, he emphasized that the US considers South Korea an important ally.
