The new agreement between Moscow and Tehran on comprehensive cooperation was temporarily suspended due to problems faced by the Iranian partners, the Associated Press reported, cited by BTA.

The agency quoted RIA Novosti, which referred to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

"This is a strategic decision of the leaders of both countries,", RIA quoted Zamir Kabulov, a representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry. "The process ... has been stopped due to problems our Iranian partners are having."

There was no immediate comment from the Iranian side.

In recent years, Russia and Iran have developed close ties, opposing what they see as harmful US foreign policy in an effort to establish what they see as a fairer multipolar world order, according to Reuters.

Work on a new major agreement between Moscow and Tehran was announced in September 2022 during a meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and the late President of the Islamic Republic Ebrahim Raisi.
