A 4.8-magnitude earthquake broke windows and caused other minor damage today in a fishing village in southwestern South Korea. No injuries were reported, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.
The earthquake, whose depth is estimated at 8 km, is the strongest recorded in South Korea this year.
An employee at the North Jeolla Province Fire Department said they received nearly 80 calls from people who felt the tremor.
According to the fire department, officials have so far confirmed three cases of minor property damage in Buan, such as a cracked warehouse wall, a broken window and broken wall tiles in two houses.
The South Korean Meteorological Office said people felt the quake in the southwestern part of North Jeolla Province.
Prime Minister Han Duk-soo issued instructions on precautionary measures due to possible aftershocks. It is ready to evacuate residents and protect key infrastructure such as power plants and transportation networks.
