US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has said he expects his rival and incumbent Joe Biden to remain in the race for the White House despite growing calls within his own Democratic Party to give way to a younger candidate. Reuters reported, BTA reported.
Trump said Biden would refuse to withdraw from the campaign because of his ego and noted that the president secured his party's nomination with the votes of delegates who supported him earlier this year in the Democratic primary. Biden has stated several times that he remains in the race.
„The interesting thing is that he has a lot of power because he got the delegates. You know, once he's got the delegates, unless he recuses himself, there's nothing they can do to remove him, short of the 25th amendment,”, Trump said in a phone interview with “Fox News”.
The amendment in question to the US Constitution allows the vice president and members of the government to declare the president incapable of exercising his powers, transferring the office of the vice president to the acting head of state. There is no indication that current Vice President Kamala Karis or leading Democrats would pursue that option.
„He has an ego and doesn't want me to retire. "It seems to me that's exactly what he wants," Trump said. The interview came amid upheaval for Democrats after Biden's disastrous debate against Trump on June 27, which sparked growing calls in his party for him to withdraw from the campaign.
