The US, Canada and Finland will form a consortium to build icebreakers, a senior US administration official said, quoted by Reuters.

The agency notes that this is a move aimed at boosting allied shipbuilding and countering Russia and China in the strategic polar region of the Arctic.

The initiative will be unveiled today on the sidelines of a three-day NATO summit in Washington, where the alliance called on China to end its support for Moscow's war on Ukraine.

The pact will aim to create a flotilla of icebreakers to "show force" in the polar regions, applying international norms and treaties, a senior representative of the US administration told journalists, calling it a "strategic imperative".

The deal, which the three NATO members are expected to sign by the end of the year, would consolidate the allies' demands for increased shipbuilding capacity, the US representative added, saying it was intended to send a message to Russia and China .
