The EU and the US face common challenges, said Ursula von der Leyen, who a few days ago was re-elected as the President of the European Commission after speaking on the phone with American President Joe Biden on Saturday, DPA reported.

Biden congratulated von der Leyen on the start of her second term at the head of the EU executive body, and the two leaders discussed support for Ukraine and efforts to hold Russia accountable for its aggression, according to a White House press release, cited by BTA .

Von der Leyen wrote on the X social network that the EU and the US face common challenges in Europe, the Middle East and the Indo-Pacific region. She added that Brussels and Washington are "partners, friends and allies".

More and more representatives of the US Democratic Party are calling on the 81-year-old Biden to withdraw his candidacy for the presidential election in November. Biden, who is currently in isolation due to the coronavirus and does not appear in public, remains outwardly unfazed by internal party criticism, DPA commented.
