Italian journalist Angelo Giuliano requested asylum in Russia after the opening ceremony of the Summer Olympics in Paris. “I am asking Russia to grant me asylum, I do not want to be part of this damn show that humiliates France”, Giuliano wrote on the X social network.
Some users even said they hoped Vladimir Putin would step in to “save” of this kind of provocation, referring to the strange characters who appeared at the opening ceremony of the games in the French capital.
However, not everyone took the ceremony so negatively. Pro-government Greek media praised the opening of the Olympics, noting that “the French wanted to combine history, culture, art with today and diversity”. They emphasized that the long-awaited ceremony on the River Seine "gave a stunning finale" that will be remembered for a long time.
At the end of February 2022, the International Olympic Committee was adamant and advised international sports federations not to allow Belarusian and Russian athletes to participate in any competitions. However, at the end of 2023, the committee changed its mind and allowed Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the Olympic Games in 2024, but only in a neutral status.
