Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky hinted that a referendum could be held in Ukraine to end the full-scale war, which Russia started in 2022.

In an interview with Le Monde, Zelensky said that “no issue of the territorial integrity of Ukraine can be solved by any president, by any person, by all the presidents in the world without the Ukrainian people”.

„Someone recently said: “What if Ukraine gives up its territories in exchange for something, security guarantees, maybe NATO, maybe the EU?“ There may be many such statements, but you must understand that officially no one has offered anything to Ukraine. And Ukraine will never give up its territories. Rulers have no official right to relinquish their territories. For this to happen, the Ukrainian people must want it, Zelensky pointed out.

„I will tell you honestly, this is not the best option, because we are dealing with Putin, and it will obviously be a victory for him if he takes part of our territories. But even later, if the conflict is frozen, he can come back and do it. That is why this issue is very, very, difficult,”, the Ukrainian president pointed out.

When asked why the Russian army is advancing on the front, Zelensky said that Ukraine cannot stop the Russian aggressor with only 3 brigades that are fully equipped. Zelensky is grateful to the Western countries for the help provided, but has often pointed out that Kiev is not getting enough weapons.

Zelensky believes the second reason is that Russian soldiers cannot retreat because they know they will be killed by their own if they do. Thirdly, the Ukrainian president pointed out, Ukraine cannot use Western weapons the way it wants. The US and other countries prohibited the ZSU from hitting Russian military targets on Russian territory.
