From next year, Australia will begin joint production with the United States of guided weapons and will strengthen the American military presence in the country, including with bombers, Reuters reported. The agency notes that the two countries are already working on the modernization of military airports in the northern part of Australia, which are geographically close to potential areas of tension with China, quoted by BTA.

Following the annual US-Australia ministerial consultations in Annapolis, Maryland, Pentagon chief Lloyd Austin said there would be an increased presence of US forces based in Australia on a rotational basis.

„This means more maritime patrol and reconnaissance aircraft operating from bases across Northern Australia. This will also mean more frequent deployment of rotary bombers, he said.

Austin added that the two allies face common security challenges, including the “coercive behavior of the other side” of China. A joint statement issued after the meeting expressed concern over Chinese military activity around Taiwan and China's excessive maritime claims in the South China Sea.

„The presence of American forces in our country provides a tremendous opportunity to work with our neighbors in the region,” said Australian Defense Minister Richard Marles.

Australia will begin joint production with the US of guided missiles next year, including the type used in Ukraine. Australia is also testing a hypersonic cruise missile with the US, considering its introduction as its first hypersonic weapon for fighter jets, the joint statement said.
