China continues to step up gray zone tactics

Authoritarian country shows persistence in efforts to crack Taiwan

Taiwan's Ministry of National Defense tracked 28 Chinese military aircraft and 10 naval vessels around Taiwan between 6 a.m. on Friday (August 9) and 6 a.m. on Saturday (August 10).

Of the Chinese missiles, 22 crossed the middle line of the Taiwan Strait in the southwest and southeast of the air defense identification zone.

In response, Taiwan sent aircraft and naval vessels and deployed missile systems to monitor China's actions.

So far this month, Taiwan has tracked Chinese aircraft 201 times and Chinese ships – 89 times. Since September 2020, in its attempt to break Taiwan, China has deepened its use of gray zone tactics by gradually increasing the number of military aircraft and naval vessels operating around Taiwan.
