Cases of monkeypox have been registered in one of the most populous countries in the world

The health department of the northern province of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa announced today that three patients infected with the disease virus have been found in Pakistan monkeypox, reported Reuters.

The virus infection was detected in the patients upon their arrival from the United Arab Emirates. The World Health Organization has declared the recent outbreak of the disease a public health emergency of international concern after a new variant of the virus was identified.

There have been cases of monkeypox in Pakistan before. So far, it is not clear which variant was found in the patients.

Two of the patients have been confirmed to be suffering from monkeypox, said Salim Khan, director general of health services in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The samples of the third patient have been sent to the National Institute of Health in the capital Islamabad for confirmation, he said, adding that all three patients have been quarantined.
