Chairman of the main Turkish opposition People's Republican Party (PPP) Özgür Özel spoke last night on the phone with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, CNN-Turk TV broadcasts, quoted by BTA.

Yozel expressed his regret that he was unable to attend the special session of the Turkish Mejlis on August 15, at which Abbas addressed the Turkish parliament. The leader of the NRP specified that he could not come to the Majlis because of an accident.

On August 16, Yozel attended a meeting in the Mejlis regarding the situation of Can Atalai, who was stripped of his MP status. Yozel came to the parliament with a plastered leg.

During the phone conversation with Abbas Yozel, he emphasized that the Palestinian Authority has always supported the just cause of the Palestinian people. He reminded that after he was elected as the chairman of the Kemalist formation, he sent a letter to 119 leaders from all over the world asking them to recognize the state of Palestine.

„We consider it necessary to have a Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital within the borders of 1967 and we support the decision to have two states”, Yozel also stated.

He thanked Abbas for his visit to Turkey and expressed support for Abbas's decision to visit the Gaza Strip.

Mahmoud Abbas wished Yozel a speedy recovery. He added that he is well aware of the actions of the Palestinian Authority and its continued support for the Palestinian cause, and that the Palestinians will “never forget this support and assistance”.
