Republicans in the House of Representatives of the United States published a report in which it is claimed that the Democratic President Joe Biden has committed violations, because of which an impeachment procedure can be initiated against him, reported Reuters, quoted by BTA.
However, it is unclear whether they will insist on a vote after an investigation that the White House says is politically motivated.
The 291-page report was prepared by two House committees. Biden is alleged to have benefited from an influence peddling scheme to amass wealth for himself and his family through foreign business deals since 2014, when he was vice president.
„The committees present this information to the House of Representatives for evaluation and consideration of appropriate next steps,” the report said.
It is not yet clear whether House Speaker Mike Johnson will schedule a vote to impeach Biden. Even if an impeachment resolution were to pass in the House, it is unlikely to be completed because the Democratic Party has a majority in the Senate (the upper house of Congress).
Democrats have characterized the Republican effort as an attempt to retaliate against former President Donald Trump, who has twice been impeached in the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives but was overturned by the Senate each time. According to the first impeachment, Trump pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to help smear Biden, in exchange for which he would receive help from the United States.
According to the report, Biden used his influence to benefit from his son Hunter Biden's business dealings with partners from Ukraine, China, Russia and other countries.
In December of last year, a three-committee impeachment inquiry was given the go-ahead. It has been criticized by members of both parties for failing to find compelling evidence of wrongdoing by Biden.
