Kamala Harris: When we fight, we win

US Democratic presidential candidate makes surprise appearance at party convention

US Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris made a surprise appearance at the party's convention on Monday night, drawing applause and vowing to defeat Republican rival Donald Trump in the November election, Reuters reported, citing BTA.

"Let us fight for the ideals that are dear to us, and let us always remember that when we fight, we win!“ Harris said in a short speech that drew loud cheers from the crowd.

She was expected to appear later along with President Joe Biden, who was listed as the keynote speaker on Monday, the first night of the four-day event in Chicago.

Biden's appearance at the start of the four-day event completes a dramatic handover to his deputy after he was pressured to step down last month by party leaders worried the 81-year-old president was too old to win or to work for another four years.

Hillary Clinton, who became the first woman to win the presidential nomination of the largest US party, was scheduled to address the convention later on Monday.

Clinton failed twice, losing the party's nomination to Obama in 2008 and the election to Trump in 2016.
