Azerbaijan officially submitted an application for joining the BRICS organization, the Azerbaijani news agency AZERTAJ reported, quoted by BTA.

BRICS was founded in 2006 and currently 9 countries are members of the organization (Brazil, Russia, India, China, South Africa, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran and the United Arab Emirates). Since 2009, BRICS has become a single geopolitical bloc that annually holds summit meetings and participates in multilateral policy coordination.

In July, during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Astana, the "Joint Declaration on Establishing a Strategic Partnership between Azerbaijan and China" was adopted. According to paragraph 4.5 of the declaration, Azerbaijan expressed its desire to join BRICS and China supported Azerbaijan's participation in the organization.

FAKTI recalls that this is happening only a day after the visit of Russian President Vladimir Putin to Baku.
