The waiting period for Iranian retaliation against Israel "could be long," the spokesman for Iran's Guards Corps said today of the Islamic Revolution Alimohamad Naini, quoted by Reuters.

Iran threatened to take revenge on Israel for the killing of the leader of the Palestinian Islamist movement "Hamas" Ismail Haniya in Tehran on July 31. Israel has neither confirmed nor denied being behind the attack.

"Time is working for us and the waiting period for this response may be long," Naini said, referring to the potential retaliation against Israel. According to him "the enemy" must wait for a well thought out and precise answer.

Iranian leaders are assessing the circumstances and the Islamic Republic of Iran's response may not be a repeat of previous operations, Naini added, according to Iranian state media.

Iran and the movement "Hamas" accused Israel of carrying out the strike that killed Haniya, hours after he attended the inauguration of Iran's new president, Massoud Pezeshkian.

The US has asked its allies with ties to Iran to persuade Tehran to de-escalate tensions in the Middle East while US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken is in the region to push for progress towards a Gaza ceasefire.

Naini noted that Iran supports any step that leads to an end to the war in Gaza and helps its people, but added: "We do not consider the actions of the US to be sincere. We consider the US to be a party to the war (in Gaza)".
