Lithuanian Foreign Minister Gabrielius Landsbergis said the success of the far-right party " "Alternative to Germany" in the elections in two German provinces is an event that is important for the whole of Europe, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

"Alternative to Germany" won 32.8% of the vote on Sunday and became the strongest force in the eastern German state of Thuringia. It is the first time a far-right party has won a regional election in Germany since World War II. The party also came second in neighboring Saxony, despite being defined as extremist by the German intelligence community.

Elections for the European Parliament in June also showed a bias of voters towards the extreme right. In France, the extreme right came out on top. She would have won the early parliamentary elections as well, if the centrists and the united left had not formed a temporary common front to prevent her.

"What we are seeing now is a European trend that is determined by many factors," said Landsbergis. "It has to do with the pandemic, the war in Ukraine, inflation, disinformation in Russia, among many other topics, and perhaps the lack of strategic leadership," he added.

The ruling coalition in Germany, led by the center-left Social Democrats, suffered a defeat in the country's elections and is expected to suffer another setback in the federal elections next year in September.
