Three people were killed and 15 were injured in a knife attack in a Shanghai suburb, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

The attack took place on Monday on the eve of China's national holiday, known as "Golden Week".

Shanghai police said they had detained a 37-year-old man surnamed Lin. Investigators say he came to Shanghai to vent his anger over a personal financial dispute.

In recent years, there has been a rise in knife attacks in China, with authorities often linking the crimes to mental illness, Reuters reported.

In September, a 10-year-old Japanese student was fatally stabbed just metres from his school in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen. The tragic incident, along with a knife attack on two Japanese nationals in the eastern Chinese city of Suzhou in June, have raised concerns among the country's Japanese community.

Such attacks are rare in Shanghai but not unprecedented. In 2022, a man attacked and injured 15 people at a major hospital in the Chinese financial hub. The perpetrator, who authorities said was "outraged by society" after a failed investment, he was sentenced to death a year later.
