Chinese leader Xi Jinping reiterated his promise to achieve "unification" with Taiwan, defining the island as an "inalienable" part of the country, the Xinhua news agency reported, quoted by Focus.

"Taiwan is China's inviolable territory", Xi assured, calling for "resolute opposition to separatist activities aimed at the island's independence".

At a ceremonial meeting marking the 75th anniversary of the founding of the People's Republic of China on September 30, Xi Jinping also stressed his determination to achieve "complete reunification of the motherland".

"This is an irreversible trend, a matter of justice and the common will of the people. No one can stop the course of history," he said in his speech to 3,000 people gathered at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing.

The founding of the People's Republic of China is celebrated on October 1.
