The stronger Ukraine is on the front, the stronger it will be in the peace negotiations. This was stated by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaia Kalas in Strasbourg, a reporter for FAKTI reported.

The European Union firmly stands behind the International Criminal Court, which issued six arrest warrants, including for Putin. Kaia Kalas pointed out that these warrants were issued after collecting the necessary evidence of violations of international law and the commission of war crimes by Russia. In addition, over 170,000 cases [for war crimes] have been opened. The EU is also providing assistance to the Ukrainian prosecutor's office.

Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022 The Russian military and authorities are accused of committing numerous war crimes in the occupied Ukrainian territories. There have been deliberate attacks on civilian targets, such as hospitals, medical facilities and Ukraine's energy infrastructure, as well as indiscriminate strikes on densely populated areas. Other crimes include the abduction, torture and murder of civilians, the forcible deportation, including of children, and the murder and torture of Ukrainian prisoners of war.

Russia is destroying the future of Ukraine, she said, adding that the European Union will continue to uphold international law and speak out about the war crimes committed by the Russian aggressor in Ukraine, including abductions and sexual assaults.

The EU must also continue to insist on the protection of prisoners of war, she said from the rostrum of the European Parliament. Only if justice is served after the war will Ukrainian families be able to move on with their lives, said Kaia Kalas. She pointed out that it is crystal clear who the aggressor is in this war and who the victim is. Kallas called on European countries to show firmness, including by strengthening sanctions.

MEPs called for strengthening sanctions against the Russian shadow fleet and the unequivocal implementation of existing ones so that the Putin regime cannot circumvent them.
