Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro is recovering from a 12-hour surgery, Reuters reported, BTA reported.
This is the fifth surgery Bolsonaro has undergone since he was stabbed in the stomach during a campaign event in 2018.
"The surgery was successful", his wife Michelle wrote on social media. "My heart is overflowing with gratitude to each and every one of you who prayed for my husband," she added.
The surgery began at 8:30 a.m. on Sunday. local time and was scheduled to last six hours, but it took twice as long. The surgical team said everything went well and that the former president is now in stable condition and is not in pain. Doctors are expected to hold a press conference later today.
The 70-year-old far-right leader was hospitalized on Friday after feeling severe abdominal pain during a meeting with supporters. The worsening symptoms forced Bolsonaro to cut short a tour of northeastern Brazil. He was transferred to a hospital in the capital, Brasilia, on Saturday night.
