Yemeni Houthi rebels have claimed responsibility for a missile attack on Israel's Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv, Reuters reported, citing a televised address by the armed group's spokesman, Yahya Sariah.

In the statement, the Houthis said they "attacked Ben Gurion Airport with a hypersonic ballistic missile that successfully hit its target," BTA reports.

Sariah reiterated the group's warning to airlines that the Israeli airport is "no longer safe for air travel." He said the attack showed "the inability of American and Israeli systems to intercept" the missile.

As a result of the strike, operations at Israel's largest international airport “completely halted operations for more than an hour“.

For his part, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz threatened that his country would respond “seven times stronger” to the strike.
