The German Christian Democratic Union (CDU) hopes a second vote to confirm its leader Friedrich Merz as the country's chancellor will be held today. This was stated by the Secretary General of the conservative party, Carsten Linemann, quoted by Agence France-Presse, reports BTA.

Earlier in the day, the Bundestag surprisingly did not confirm Merz, even though the CDU, together with its sister party, the Christian Social Union (CSU) and its coalition partner, the German Social Democratic Party (SPD), have an absolute majority in the lower house of parliament.

“We are currently investigating whether a second round can be held today... I hope that we will have a chancellor named Friedrich Merz tonight“, Linemann told German media.

The chairman of the CDU parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Jens Spahn, also confirmed, quoted by DPA, that Merz plans to run again. It is not yet clear when exactly the next vote will take place, he specified.
