The German Bundestag elected today, on a second attempt, the leader of the Christian Democratic Union, Friedrich Merz, as the country's new chancellor, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

A few hours earlier, Merz did not receive the absolute majority he needed and was surprisingly not confirmed in the post by the lower house of the German parliament.
