The European Commission announced that it will propose that the EU stop importing Russian natural gas and liquefied natural gas under long-term contracts by the end of 2027. In addition, by the end of 2025 a ban on imports under new contracts and deals for immediate delivery is envisaged, Reuters reports, BTA reports.

In the document on the gradual abandonment of Russian energy resources, called the “roadmap“, published today, the European Commission also proposed imposing restrictions on new deals for Russian nuclear fuel.

The EU legislative proposals must be approved by a majority of deputies in the European Parliament and a qualified majority of EU member states.

The 27-member bloc confirmed its commitment to ending decades-long relations with Russia in the energy sector after Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

"It is time for Europe to completely sever its energy ties with an unreliable partner. "The energy that comes to our continent must not finance military aggression against Ukraine," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said in a statement.
