Gunmen killed a mayoral candidate from the ruling party in the Mexican Gulf state of Veracruz and four others accompanying her, the Associated Press reported, BTA reported.

This is the second murder of a local candidate in the state before the June 1 election, authorities confirmed. Later on Monday, reports emerged that two federal agents had been killed in another part of the state.

The attack on candidate Yesenia Lara Gutierrez of the "Morena" party took place on Sunday as she led a caravan of supporters through Texistepec. Three other people were injured.

Veracruz Governor Rocio Nale, also from President Claudia Sheinbaum's "Morena" party, said Monday that Lara Gutierrez's daughter was among those killed.

Texistepec is a city of 20,000 people southwest of the important oil port of Coatzacoalcos.

"No (elective) position is worth dying for," Nale said at a news conference on Monday, promising justice. "The entire power of the state will be present in the coming days to ensure that the elections are free and democratic," she said.
