Libya's Defense Ministry announced today, following clashes between rival militias in Tripoli earlier this week, that a ceasefire had been reached, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

Neutral security forces were deployed in key areas of the capital in an attempt to contain violence and restore order, the ministry said.

The government stressed that it would not tolerate the presence of armed groups operating outside state authority.

The fighting was sparked by the killing on Monday of Abdel Ghani al-Kiqli, an influential militia leader and head of the Stability Maintenance Apparatus (SMA).

Al-Kiqli's paramilitary unit, considered one of the most powerful non-government forces, clashed with the 444th Brigade, an armed group loyal to Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibeh.

Observers believe the fighting is part of an ongoing power struggle between rival factions in Tripoli.

Although the exact death toll has not been confirmed, six other people have been reported dead in addition to Kikli.

The UN Support Mission in Libya expressed deep concern about the escalation of violence and called for an immediate and unconditional cessation of hostilities. The civil war in the North African country erupted after the fall and assassination of its long-time leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, DPA recalls.
