State of emergency declared on Greek island of Evia

A state of emergency was declared today in the northern part of the Greek island of Evia after a series of earthquakes registered in the region in the last 24 hours, reports the newspaper "Kathimerini". All schools will be closed tomorrow as a preventive measure, BTA reported/

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake was registered today at 3:23 a.m. in the Aegean Sea off the island of Evia.

The Greek Directorate for Disaster Recovery declared three houses uninhabitable and recommended their demolition. The affected families will be temporarily accommodated in the guesthouse of the local metropolis in Prokopi.

Earlier, the mayor of the municipality of Mantoudi-Limni-Agia Anna, Giorgos Tsapourniotis, told public broadcaster ERT that preliminary inspections had revealed damage to over 50 houses, as well as several municipal buildings and schools.
