Authorities in the US state of Indiana have executed a man convicted of killing a police officer in 2000, the Associated Press reported, BTA reported.
Benjamin Ritchie was put to death by lethal injection today at the Indiana State Penitentiary in Michigan City, local prison authorities said.
In a statement posted online, they said the execution began shortly after midnight and the inmate's death was announced at 12:46 a.m.
Forty-five-year-old Ritchie was sentenced to death in 2002 when he was found guilty of fatally shooting Beech Grove police officer Bill Toney as he tried to escape on foot.
The convict regretted his actions during a hearing earlier this month, saying he had changed after more than two decades in prison.
