A ship from the so-called Russian “shadow fleet“, subject to Western sanctions, made suspicious maneuvers near an electrical cable connecting Poland and Sweden, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said today on the social network “Ex“, quoted by Reuters, BTA reported.

“After the effective intervention of our armed forces, the ship sailed to one of the Russian ports“, the Polish prime minister added. He said that the ship from the Polish navy “Hewelusz“ is sailing towards the location where the Russian naval vessel was detected.

The 600-megawatt submarine cable connects the Swedish coast near Karlhamn with Ustka in northern Poland and allows the energy networks of both countries to rely on cross-border supplies when electricity on the other network is cheaper.

NATO has tightened security in the Baltic Sea after a series of incidents in which power and telecommunications cables, as well as gas pipelines, were damaged since the start of Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Polish Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kościńska-Kamiś said the cable belonged to Polish system operator PSE. The company said today that the cable connecting Poland and Sweden was intact. The company's data shows that the cable is currently operating at full capacity and supplying electricity to Sweden.
