The United States will impose sanctions on Sudan over its use of chemical weapons in 2024, the BBC reports. The decision was presented to Congress along with an updated Report on Compliance with the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) dated April 15, which found that the Sudanese government is violating its commitments under this international treaty, Focus reports.

“In two weeks, the US will impose sanctions against Sudan over its use of chemical weapons, including restrictions on US exports to the country and a ban on the Sudanese government's access to US credit lines“, the official statement said. The sanctions are expected to take effect upon their publication in the Federal Register around June 6.

The statement also emphasized that “The United States calls on the Government of Sudan to immediately cease its use of chemical weapons and adhere to its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention“.
