The United States did not do enough to stop Russian aggression and restore peace in Ukraine in 2014. This was stated during the Black Sea Security Forum in Odessa by Mike Pompeo, former CIA director and US Secretary of State during Donald Trump's first term, UNIAN reported. quoted by FOCUS.

"I'm sorry that we didn't do enough in 2014 and in 2022... And I participated in the negotiations in Minsk... We've already been at the negotiating table and we've seen and heard a lot. And it seems that we've found a certain line of control, but that didn't stop the massive aggression in 2022. And these negotiations in Minsk look the same as the negotiations we are seeing now,“ Pompeo said.

He added that even if the war ends, “we cannot go back to Russian gas“ because Moscow can find a new target for its aggression at any time. This could be the north, or the Mediterranean, where the Russian Federation has its own military contingent and so on.

“If Putin lays down his arms, we must understand that this could easily happen again. And it may not be Ukraine, but any other region where the Russian military contingent is present... The Russians simply do not want the Western world to exist," Pompeo emphasizes.

The War in Ukraine and the United States

According to the former US Ambassador to Ukraine, honorary member of the Atlantic Council William Taylor, US leader Donald Trump, despite concerns about possible sympathies for Moscow, may still impose sanctions on the Russian Federation. According to him, the White House has the potential to make difficult decisions regarding the Kremlin.

As the diplomat suggests, Trump will use his influence and is likely to impose sanctions on Russia and supply Ukraine with more weapons to force Putin to stop the war, UNIAN writes.
