Several people were taken to the hospital and a suspect was detained after a stabbing at a homeless shelter in the US city of Salem, Oregon, the Associated Press reported, citing police, BTA reported.

Police were called shortly after 7 a.m. local time after a report of a stabbing at the center.

Executive Director Craig Smith told "NBC News" that the attacker was a recent resident at the center and had spent the previous night there, intending to stay a second night, but got into a fight with other residents.

"He was clearly upset about something," Smith said, adding that the man apparently had a knife in his bag.

The argument broke out just before the man handed over his belongings to staff, and at least one of the employees who were on shift in the center's reception area was injured in the attack, Smith added.

Police said several people were injured, without specifying the exact nature of their injuries. Local television stations reported that 11 people were taken to Salem Health Hospital.

Law enforcement did not release information about the arrests.

About 150 people take shelter at the homeless shelter each night, according to the website.
