Trump sends National Guard to California amid clashes between protesters and immigration authorities

2,000 National Guard members to deal with anarchy, White House says

US President Donald Trump has ordered 2,000 National Guard members to be deployed to Los Angeles and California, where there have been violent clashes between protesters and immigration officials, world agencies reported, quoted by BTA.

The clashes followed protests against the mass arrests of illegal immigrants.

"President Trump signed a memorandum that provides for the deployment of 2,000 National Guard members to deal with the anarchy that others have allowed to flourish,“ said White House spokeswoman Caroline Levitt.

According to the US Department of Homeland Security on Friday, around 1,000 protesters attacked U.S. Customs and Border Patrol agents. U.S. Border Patrol Commissioner Michael Banks said several arrests were made yesterday for alleged assaults on federal agents, the DPA reported.

A White House statement said immigration enforcement operations were "essential to stopping the invasion of illegal immigrants."

"After this violence, California's reckless Democratic leaders have completely abdicated their responsibility to protect their citizens," the statement said.

"The Trump administration has a zero-tolerance policy for criminal behavior and violence, especially when that violence is directed at law enforcement officers trying to do their jobs." "These criminals will be arrested and brought to justice quickly," the text added.

US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth said yesterday that the Pentagon was prepared to mobilize Marines to active duty if violence continued in Los Angeles, Reuters reported. Marines from the Camp Pendleton base were on high alert to assist law enforcement.
