Donald Tusk seeks confidence vote after Poland's election defeat

Confrontation with newly elected nationalist president Karol Nawrocki expected

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has requested a confidence vote in parliament today after losing the presidential election, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.

The vote, scheduled for 10:00 a.m. local time, aims to bolster support for the pro-European centrist coalition led by Tusk. The vote comes just days after nationalist conservative Karol Nawrocki won Poland's presidential election.

Tusk is expected to enter a sharp political clash with the new head of state, backed by the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party. The prime minister, who will lead the government from the end of 2023, is determined to continue efforts to restore the rule of law, undermined by judicial reforms introduced by PiS between 2015 and 2023.

The previous president, Andrzej Duda, also a conservative, often blocked Tusk's government's bills. Nawrocki is expected to continue that line, even with a tougher approach, when he takes office on August 6.

Karol Nawrocki, a 42-year-old historian and nationalist, is not formally affiliated with a political party, but his victory was the result of the support of Jarosław Kaczyński, the PiS leader and a long-time opponent of Tusk. Nawrocki said last week that the prime minister could expect "strong resistance from the presidential palace."
