A plane flying to London with over 200 people on board has crashed in the Indian city of Ahmedabad

Fire engines have been sent to the scene to douse the flames, a fire service official said

An "Air India" plane flying to London has crashed with more than 200 people on board near the airport in the Indian city of Ahmedabad, shortly after takeoff, the Indian news agency PTI reported, citing police.

"Flight AI171, operating from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick, encountered an incident today, June 12, 2025. We are currently investigating the details and will provide further information as soon as possible," Air India wrote on the social network "Ex".

There were 242 people on board the plane, Indian news agency ANI reported, citing police in the state of Gujarat. However, according to Indian television channel "CNN News18" (CNN News18), there were 220 passengers and 12 crew members on board, Reuters notes.

The plane crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad International Airport, at around 2:00 p.m. local time.

Fire engines have been sent to the scene to put out the flames, a fire department official said.
