The leaders of the Group of Seven (G-7) countries agreed on a joint statement in which they support Israel's right to self-defense and oppose Iran's possession of nuclear weapons, DPA reported, BTA reported.

The agency defines this development as unexpected.

The statement issued by the seven leading democracies, who gathered for a summit in western Canada, called Iran a "major source of regional instability and terror". Iran "can never have nuclear weapons", the United States, Britain, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and Canada stressed.

The G-7 leaders also said that Israel has a "right to defend itself" and supported its security. The statement also called for "a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip".
