Israel would have killed Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei if it had been possible during the 12-day war between the countries, Defense Minister Israel Katz said, quoted by Reuters, BTA reports.

"I think that if Khamenei was in our sights, we would have eliminated him", Katz said in an interview with Israeli public television Kan. "But Khamenei understood this, went underground to a very great depth and cut off contacts with the commanders who replaced those commanders who were eliminated, so ultimately it was not realistic", the minister added.

At the beginning of the war, on June 13, Israel killed several senior Iranian commanders and nuclear scientists. At various points during the war, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump suggested that Khamenei's life might be in danger, Reuters recalls.

The 12-day conflict ended with a ceasefire brokered by the US.
