July 16 was the first day of large-scale changes in the Ukrainian Cabinet of Ministers. Today, the Verkhovna Rada dismissed Prime Minister Denys Shmygal, who had led the government for more than five years - a record-long period in the history of Ukraine. His government was also dismissed. A new cabinet is expected to be appointed tomorrow. Shmygal is likely to become the new Minister of Defense, replacing Rustem Umerov, New Voice reports, quoted by Focus.

Today's cabinet changes are the most significant since the beginning of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

NV sources reported earlier that the reshuffle of the government will last two days: on July 16, the Rada will dismiss the Prime Minister and ministers, and on Thursday, July 17, it will appoint new ones.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky proposed Yulia Sviridenko, First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy of Ukraine, to head the government.

Denys Shmygal has been Prime Minister of Ukraine since March 4, 2020 - longer than any of his predecessors in this position. He broke Ukraine's historical record in February 2024, when he served in office for over 1,460 days, breaking the record of Mykola Azarov (he headed the Cabinet of Ministers from March 2010 to January 2014).
