US President Donald Trump announced on the social network "Truth" that "Coca-Cola" (Coca-Cola) will start using "real cane sugar" in its flagship drink, intended for the US market, "Reuters" reported.
"I have spoken with "Coca-Cola" about using REAL cane sugar in their drink in the United States and they have agreed to do it. I would like to thank all the responsible persons at "Coca-Cola". This will be a very good move on their part - you will see. It is simply better!" wrote Donald Trump.
"Coca-Cola" uses high-fructose corn syrup to sweeten its products in the United States, while in other countries it uses cane sugar, "Reuters" specified.
The change announced by the president comes at a time when Trump continues to support efforts by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to abandon some food ingredients, such as artificial colors.
Through the "Make America Healthy Again" initiative The Trump administration aims to stop the food industry from contributing to the chronic health problems Americans face, from obesity to heart disease.
Medical experts recommend limiting added sugar in the diet, but have found no significant differences between cane sugar and high-fructose corn syrup.
Corn producers, concentrated in the Midwest, have long wielded significant influence over lawmakers in Washington. President Donald Trump's home state of Florida is the nation's largest producer of sugarcane.
"Replacing high-fructose corn syrup with cane sugar makes no sense," said John Bode, president and CEO of the Corn Refiners Association.
"Replacing high-fructose corn syrup with cane sugar would eliminate thousands of jobs in American food production, reduce farm incomes and increase imports of foreign sugar, all for no nutritional benefit," said John Bode.
