Two people have died and over 1,000 have been evacuated in South Korea as a result of torrential rains that have poured over the country, Reuters reported, BTA reports.

According to information from the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Security as of 11:00 local time, over 400 millimeters of rain were recorded in less than 24 hours in parts of the South Chungcheong region, located south of the capital Seoul.

The Korea Meteorological Administration declared the rainfall a record and warned of continued wet weather in the evening hours. Several areas, including South Chungcheong, were issued the highest level of landslide warnings.

In the city of Gwangju, about 267 kilometers south of Seoul, 87 road sections and 38 buildings were flooded within just two hours of the heavy rain.

Educational infrastructure was also severely damaged, with about 403 schools temporarily closed and 166 reporting property damage.

Authorities remain on high alert due to forecasts of more heavy rainfall and a continued risk of landslides and flooding in affected regions.
