Armed clashes broke out between Thailand and Cambodia on a disputed stretch of their shared border on Monday, both sides said, accusing each other of attacking first after weeks of tension and diplomatic skirmishes, Reuters reported, BTA reported.

The clash came after Thailand withdrew its ambassador from Cambodia late on Monday and said it would expel the Cambodian ambassador in Bangkok after a second Thai soldier lost a limb to an anti-personnel mine that Thailand said was recently planted in the disputed border area.

The Thai military said on Monday that Cambodia had launched a reconnaissance drone before sending its heavily armed troops into a disputed area about 360 km (220 miles) from Bangkok.

A Thai army spokesman said Cambodian forces opened fire and that two Thai soldiers were wounded.

A Cambodian defense ministry spokesman, however, said it was an unprovoked Thai attack and that Cambodian forces acted in self-defense.
