Ukraine should not join the European Union, because this would "weaken" it and would bring its war with Russia to the EU. This statement was expressed by Hungarian Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó in an interview with CNN.
Péter Szijjártó confirms that Budapest opposes negotiations with Kiev about its future in the European Union.
"Ukraine will definitely not make the European Union stronger. On the contrary, a country that is waging war "brings" war to the EU. And we do not want that. "The current state of Ukraine will only weaken the European Union," Szijjártó said.
He also said that Europe should not waste resources on a country that "does not meet the criteria for membership."
The head of the Hungarian Foreign Ministry complained about the "unfair" funding for Ukraine.
"As for us, we do not want Hungarian taxpayers' money to go to Ukraine. Under the current circumstances, we categorically do not support its accession to the EU," he added.
At the same time, Szijjártó assured that his country is helping the Ukrainians: it supplies electricity and accepts refugees.
"You say that we do not support Ukraine. But we are helping - with what we can. At the same time, we will not allow Hungary to be destroyed. "Our people have already paid a very high price for this war, even though we are not responsible for it. This is not our war," Szijjártó stressed.
