Pakistan's largest oil refinery Cnergyico will import 1 million barrels of US West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude oil in October.

The batch was purchased by global energy trading company Vitol, Cnergyico Deputy Chief Executive Osama Qureshi told Reuters. "This is a test batch within the framework of a long-term agreement with Vitol. "If the deal proves commercially viable and affordable, we will be able to import at least one batch per month," he said.

The oil deal was struck several months after US President Donald Trump threatened Pakistan's exports to the US with significant tariffs, forcing Islamabad to expand its energy and trade relations with Washington, the agency said.

Pakistan's first purchase of US oil marked a significant change in the world's fifth most populous country's long-standing dependence on Middle Eastern oil and gas suppliers.

Oil is Pakistan's largest import commodity. Its shipments in the fiscal year 2024/25 (July 2024-June 2025) reached $11.3 billion, accounting for 20% of the country's total imports.
