Only one in six Germans says they would fight without hesitation in the event of a military conflict, according to a new sociological survey cited by DPA, BTA reports.

The survey, conducted by the German institute “Forsa“, shows that 16% of those surveyed “would definitely“ fight if Germany was attacked, and another 22% said they “probably“ would do so.

At the same time, a clear majority of 59% answer that they “probably not“ or “definitely not“ would take up arms to defend the country. This proportion is significantly higher among women, 72% of whom state that they are unwilling to participate in combat operations.

At the same time, 27% of respondents believe that a military attack on Germany in the next five years is “very“ or “somewhat“ likely.

Around 59% believe that Germany will be forced to provide military assistance to another NATO member state within the framework of its collective defense obligations during the same period.

The survey was conducted among around 1,000 German citizens on July 28 and 29, amid heightened debate in the country about military preparedness and the protection of national security. According to the DPA, the permissible statistical margin of error is ±3 percentage points.
