US President Donald Trump said that Chinese leader Xi Jinping told him that he would not invade Taiwan while Trump is in power, Reuters reported, citing an interview the US head of state gave to "Fox News".

"He told me: "I will never do that while you are president". President Xi told me that, and I said, "Okay, I appreciate it," the US president said.

The US and Chinese presidents held their first official conversation during Trump's second term in June.

In April, Trump said Xi had called him, but did not specify when the call took place.

China claims Taiwan as its territory and has vowed to "unite" with the democratically-ruled island, even by force if necessary. Taiwan has strongly opposed China's claims to sovereignty.

Yesterday, the Chinese embassy in Washington described the issue of "Taiwan" as "the most important and sensitive issue" in relations between Washington and Beijing.

Although Washington is the main supporter and supplier of weapons to Taiwan, the United States - like most countries - does not maintain formal diplomatic relations with the island, Reuters notes.
