A deputy from the Iranian parliament expressed disagreement with the potential change of the border of the Islamic Republic with Armenia or the complete abolition of the common border between the two countries, the Iranian news agency IRNA reported, quoted by BTA.

The representative of the Armenians in the southern part of Iran, Gegard Mansurian, expressed this position today in an interview with IRNA, stating that “Iran firmly upholds the security and status quo of its borders“.

The Caucasus region is the “link between Iran and Armenia“ and therefore the border between the two countries should not be closed, noted Mansurian, who is also the deputy chairman of the Iran-Armenia parliamentary friendship group.

Referring to President Masoud Pezeshkian's visit to Armenia starting today, the MP emphasized Iran's good relations with that country, stating that the Armenian authorities know very well that Iran is one of the factors for their country's security.

He recalled the Iranian military exercises held in 2020 and 2021, claiming that these maneuvers thwarted the intentions of some of Armenia's enemies to forcibly tear the Syunik region from Armenia.

Referring to the agreement between Yerevan and Baku reached with the mediation of the United States earlier this month on the Zangezur corridor connecting Nakhchivan with Azerbaijan, Mansurian said that President Pezeshkian will likely raise the topic of some of the ambiguities on this agreement and that Iran should definitely be part of this corridor.

Concerns are growing, in connection with the revelation that American companies will guarantee the security of the corridor, which was rejected by the Armenian authorities.

Mansuryan also recalled recent telephone conversations in which the Armenian authorities clearly stated that they are aware of Iran's positions and will not allow threats to the national interests and security of Iran and Armenia.
