Local authorities on the Chalkidiki peninsula in northern Greece are continuing their efforts to remove umbrellas that some tourists illegally leave on beaches, state television ERT reports, BTA reports.

The deputy mayor of Polygyros Municipality, Thanasis Tsingas, explained that the initiative to clear the beaches of permanently placed umbrellas and other beach equipment began last year.

Some tourists who leave their umbrellas permanently on the beach have complained that they received the equipment together with the rented holiday properties and have asked for it to be returned to them in order to hand it over to the owners of the homes.

“We informed them that this cannot happen, as equipment left illegally on the beach is considered waste and must be disposed of,“ Tsingas pointed out.
