A senior German lawmaker expects German troops to be deployed to keep the peace in the event of a lasting ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, according to his interview with We De Air television, DPA reported, BTA reported.
Thomas Rovekamp, chairman of the Bundestag's defense committee, said that Europeans and Ukrainians have bad experience with Russia's compliance with its commitments, which is why an effective military deterrent is needed.
"And that also means that German soldiers will guarantee in the future, after a peace agreement with Russia is concluded, that peace will be maintained forever," Rovekamp said.
As examples of the type of support the Bundeswehr could provide, Rovekamp mentioned assistance with logistics, training of Ukrainian soldiers and air defense.
"In the Bundeswehr, we have a whole range of military capabilities that can ensure lasting peace in Ukraine", said the chairman of the commission.
For Ukrainians, the question of possible security guarantees from the allies is a key point in any potential peace agreement. Mistrust of Russia is high after almost three and a half years of war.
"It is about giving Ukraine a binding guarantee, including a military one, that in the event of a new attack by Russia, the Europeans, together with American troops, are ready to repel the attack", said Rovekamp.
„Ultimately, no one wants war and the surest way to prevent another military confrontation would be to deter the Russian army from such a war with the help of a strong military presence."
