The popular platform “Telegram“, which is currently used by nearly 10 million people in Turkey, is becoming a hub for criminal activity in the country, warns technology expert Ufuk Karakullukcu, quoted by “Daily Sabah“, BTA reported.

According to the expert, illegal content such as materials violating public morals, videos involving animal abuse, as well as personal data, are freely traded for money in some of the groups on “Telegram“, while at the same time, members of these groups speak disrespectfully against various religious groups and mock deceased Turkish military personnel.

“The platform “Telegram“ has neither an office nor a representative office in Turkey. There is no channel through which attention can be paid or responsibility sought for what is happening“, Karakullukcu also shared, noting that due to “Telegram“s policy, according to which no user information is shared with Turkey and other countries, many users remain anonymous and can carry out illegal activities with virtual impunity.

The facilitated access to the platform and the channels in which criminal activity takes place also contributes to the increase in crimes in the country, the expert believes. “It is also important to note the fact that sending large files on “Telegram“ is becoming significantly easier compared to other platforms, which further facilitates the trade in personal data, bank accounts and other key information“, he also shared.
